Types of Horse Polo

While most people immediately associate the sport of polo to be played on a grass field, there are actually multiple variations of the sport, all with their unique qualities and distinctions.

Grass Polo

Grass polo is the most traditional and recognised form of polo. It is played outdoors on a grass field measuring approximately 300 yards by 160 yards, involving two teams of four players each. Players require several horses, switching mounts frequently to maintain performance. A typical match has four to six chukkers, with each chukker lasting approximately seven and a half minutes. Sylvester Stallone has quoted the sport as “like trying to play golf in an earthquake,” which is no surprise given the high speeds of the sport combined with the small size of the ball (roughly 3 inches in diameter).

Arena Polo

One of the fastest-growing forms of polo, the arena variant is played in enclosed arenas, indoors or outdoors. The playing area is typically 45 metres by 90 metres but can be smaller. Arena polo teams have three players per side, reducing the number of horses required and making it more accessible.

The ball used in arena polo is larger and softer, suitable for enclosed play. The smaller arena results in a quicker game, demanding rapid decisions from players and horses. Traditional arena polo uses enclosed walls to keep the ball in constant play, while variants like Formula One Polo have open ends similar to grass polo.

Arena polo can be played day or night and in various weather conditions. Unlike grass polo, arena polo allows spectators to sit closer to the action, enhancing the viewing experience.

Beach Polo

Beach polo is played on sand, often on beaches, using smaller pitches around 100 metres by 50 metres. Teams typically have three players. A specially inflated ball ensures consistent play on sandy surfaces. Matches are usually shorter, featuring fewer chukkers, which makes beach polo particularly spectator-friendly. Beach polo events frequently combine with social activities, attracting diverse and international audiences. The Miami Beach Polo World Cup is one such popular event.

Snow Polo

Snow polo is played on snow or frozen lakes, typically on smaller fields around 180 metres by 90 metres. Teams consist of three players, similar to beach and arena polo. The ball in snow polo is brightly coloured, usually orange, and larger for better visibility. Horses wear special footwear for improved grip on icy surfaces. Snow Polo is notably highlighted by the annual Snow Polo World Cup in St. Moritz, played on the frozen lake, drawing international attention and participants.
